By Brooklyn Billinghurst In recent years, tattoos have become more mainstream, and more and more young people are getting them. Back in the day, tattoos were a symbol of criminal activity, specifically that you had gone to prison, or that you were in the army. Now, they function much more as a mode of self-expression. Authority figures in our society, like teachers, even have tattoos. With tattoos becoming more mainstream, there is the rise of tattoo trends. Getting a trendy tattoo is nothing new, but the way in which we are informed of these trends are. Pinterest is the main offender in the world of tattoo trend sharing. There is even a stereotype held amongst the tattoo community that dainty little ‘Pinterest tattoos’ are embarrassing, and not real tattoos. You can feel whatever way you want about these tattoos, but the truth is that, through means like social media, tattoos are becoming more and more connected to the world of fashion. Take the ‘tramp stamp’ tattoo for example. In the 2000s, it was a symbol for adventurous young women to have on their lower backs. It-Girl celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears were seen with one. However, the tramp stamp tattoo fell out of favor quickly (the name, of course, did nothing to help its popularity), and women were shamed for even having them. With the recent resurgence of Y2K fashion in the 2020s, tramp stamps have actually come back into style. They’re the perfect Y2K permanent accessory for all your low rise jeans. In the high fashion world, seldom have we seen tattooed models. This is sometimes for practicality, and the designers want the clothing to be the main focus. This has also been changing in the last 10 years or so. Starting with supermodel Cara Delavigne, runways were becoming dotted with tattoos. Instead of being the distraction they once were, they now elevated looks, becoming an edgy accessory to the outfit. The most famous example of this currently is (my queen) model Gabbriette Bechtel. You’ve seen Gabbriette on everything from Nike ads, to her Tik Tok recipes, to being the face of the ‘Bayonetta’ look in 2023. Her arms are also covered in tattoos. Most runways and shoots she has been in choose not to cover up her tattoos. They mark her individuality, and add a bit of gothic glam to whatever she is wearing.
